How Much Do Publishers Pay For Comic Book Art (and Script)?

As a comic artist professional, are you wondering if you're under paid?

Fair Page Rates just released its annual report about how much comic book publishers are paying their contributors.

"...The goal of the survey is to build a resource that allows creators to have more information about standard rates in the comics industry. Fair Page Rates also hope this data will encourage more professionals not to accept work that pays below certain standards..."

But folks, if you're just starting to work with a publisher, don't use this list as a reference on how much you want to get paid. Remember these are the results from established artists. You gotta start somewhere, and typically that means you'll be paid less than the hot shot bigger boys!

For The 2nd Year In a Row, Vinyl Records Sales Outperformed Music Streaming Revenues.

The 2015 music industry numbers are out at the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America), and for the second year in a row, vinyl sales outperformed the revenues of streaming, subscription and ad-supported apps like Spotify and Youtube. In fact, vinyl records sales are almost on par with the numbers of 1988.

Vinyl records are still a niche market, but to the music industry, it is a significant source of revenues. Thousand of vinyl album sales generate more than the billions of streams served in the digital world.

That says a lot... Even though streaming is extremely popular for the audience, the music industry, studios and artists don't really get anything out of it, at least directly.

Seems I am not the only one who previews an album on iTune, and then go buy the vinyl record at the local music store instead of downloading it.

As per Samantha's Etsy description: "Each fingerling is made with a three buttonhole adjustable closure. The tail is also made to wrap loosely around the neck and it attaches with a button closure.

If you're like me and loved Captain Nemo's car in League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen, you will be delighted to know that the car is up for sale!

Built by Ken Freeman, the best custom car builder ever (maybe after George 'Batmobile' Barris?). Ken is the owner of a body shop in North Carolina, and he's the one behind Spirit of Nemo.

Productivity Toy: The Surface Hub. A Wall-mounted Tablet.

Microsoft's Surface Hub is finally shipping!

"If you’re in the market for a giant 84-inch 4K touchscreen computer (and have about $22,000 set aside for that), today is a good day. After numerous delays, Microsoft today started shipping its Surface Hub to business customers.

Surface Hub comes in both the giant 84-inch version and a smaller 55-inch HD edition for a relatively affordable $8,999. You’ll still need a stand for them, too, which will set you back another $3,699 for the rolling stand for the 84-inch model and $2,350 for the 55-inch version (or less if you just want to mount your Hub to a wall).

Microsoft had originally set the prices for the Windows 10-based Surface Hubs at $19,999 and $6,999, but later increased them.

Microsoft is marketing the Surface Hub, which is based on the technology it acquired when it bought Perceptive Pixel in 2012, as a new tool for collaboration — both in person and through video conferences.

“Our early Surface Hub business partners can tell you confidently that they work together better with Surface Hub,” Microsoft devices marketing GM Brian Hall writes today. “This is why we built Surface Hub. […] We are excited to see how Surface Hub will bring people together to work, create and learn in new ways.”

The company says a number of companies are already using Surface Hub to see how it “will improve how people work together and engage customers.”

Because $20,000 is obviously a big investment for any company, Microsoft worked with Forrester to commission a Total Economic Impact study. This study showed that using Surface Hub in a business environment resulted in benefits ” of more than $850,000 (3 year NPV) based on savings in device deployment and management costs, avoided printing and device purchase costs, and improved sales.” You should obviously take that with a grain of salt. Microsoft commissioned this study, after all. If you need to make an argument to management why you need to buy one of these, though, you should probably bring a copy of this study to your meeting."

DC Entertainment Launches Talent Development Program!

In an effort to find new and aspiring comic book talent, DC Entertainment has launched Talent Development Workshops for both writers and artists, led by bestselling and acclaimed comic talent including Jim Lee, Geoff Johns, Scott Snyder, Klaus Janson and Andy Kubert. The series of workshops are designed to give access and a voice to new and prospective talent, providing an opportunity to showcase their work following intensive DC workshop sessions.

Online applications for DC’s Artists Workshop will be accepted April 1-30, 2016 while applications for the Writers Workshop will be accepted May 1-31, 2016. DC’s new Talent Development website offers extensive tips, advice and recommended reading to help potential applicants navigate the submission process. Both workshops will take place in fall 2016.

“Our goal is to identify and foster fresh, new voices,” stated DC Entertainment Co-Publisher and bestselling artist, Jim Lee. “The new DC Talent Development Workshops will play a vital role in discovering and developing the next generation of comic talent.”

About the Artists Workshop

The 2016 Artists Workshop was developed by DC with world-renowned artists Jim Lee, Klaus Janson and Andy Kubert and follows a successful pilot program that took place in fall 2015. Visit to view artwork completed by pilot program students.

Competitive candidates will have an established portfolio of sequential art and illustrations. For the artists selected via the online submission process, the Workshop will provide the knowledge and exposure required to cross the threshold into the competitive world of comic book publishing. Chosen artists will be asked to complete art assignments that will be critiqued by several top DC Artists. If the artists achieve the level of work required for the course they will then be invited to a two-week, intensive workshop at DCE’s Burbank offices.

About the Writers Workshop

The 2016 Writers Workshop was developed by DC with bestselling writer Scott Snyder and follows a successful three-month pilot program. For selected candidates, the first part of the 2016–2017 DC Comics Writers Workshop will run October 2016–January 2017 as an online real-time, weekly interactive seminar, for thirteen consecutive weeks. Each seminar will teach a new skill essential for surviving and excelling in this highly competitive field. Following the initial Workshop, a smaller hand-selected group of those participants will be invited to DCE offices in Burbank for an intensive writing experience, featuring guest speakers currently working in comic books, including a mix of editors, writers, artists and the Talent Development staff.

Netflix Admitted They Throttle Connection Speed For Some Users

This shouldn't come as a surprise...

Streaming video over the internet is expensive, even Youtube struggle to make money with it, and the last thing Netflix want is to have viewers to flock away from their service after ending up with a dramatic overcharge from their internet service providers for busting their monthly plan.

So to fix that, some users end up with lower bitrate without their knowledge (therefore a significant quality decrease) than other users having a more capable data plan.

"Netflix has long presented itself as a champion of unfettered access to Internet content. But those claims are ringing a little hollow after the company admitted Thursday that it deliberately slows down its streams for customers watching on the cellular networks of AT&T and Verizon.

Normally, Netflix subscribers need at least a 500 Kbps connection just to open a streaming TV show or film. The service recommends a connection that's at least six times as fast for normal viewing at standard definition.

But for more than five years, Netflix has capped its video stream to just 600 Kbps for AT&T and Verizon's wireless customers, the company told the Wall Street Journal Thursday. The reason? Well, because video uses up a lot of data, Netflix subscribers risked blowing past their monthly caps without the throttling. Not only does going over your limit result in sometimes stiff penalties, but it also may discourage users from continuing to watch Netflix. The throttling therefore helps ensure that consumers on AT&T and Verizon don't overuse their data -- and that viewers' binge watching habits won't get cut short."

Dwayne Johnson As Doc Savage?

To Shane Black, there’s just one actor suited to play pulp hero Doc Savage, the Man of Bronze: it's Dwayne Johnson.

Black signed on in 2013 to co-write and direct a Sony Pictures adaptation, which he says “it's a personal film to me,” but since then there hasn’t been much done on the project.

“‘Doc Savage’ is sort of in the ether now,” Black tells Thrillist. “We’re hoping to make it sometime next year. I would very much like to do ‘Doc’ with a fellow named Dwayne Johnson if we can make that work. I made a decision that Dwayne is the guy. It’s on the back burner while he’s busy.”

In 2013, Black described the kind of actor he envisioned for his Man of Bronze: “They kind of gotta be tall. He’s the perfect physical specimen and when people look at him, they’re overawed by the sort of symmetry and perfection he exudes. You need someone magnetic and someone a little bit off because that’s the fun of the character. He’s been secluded from people and kept from any social niceties for so long that he’s become a savant.”

Beware: Shark Exorcist Is Coming. Satan Has Jaws!

Nothing can stop the folks over at Wild Eye Releasing. Their latest cult hit offering will damn you to Hell: SHARK EXORCIST!

A demonic, murderous nun unleashes terror on a small fishing town when she summons Satan to inhabit the body of a great white shark. Satan also takes over the body of a local young woman, starting a chain reaction of evil. To save the day, a Catholic priest must take to land and sea in order to send this man-eater back to where it came from: Hell!

Directed by Donald Farmer (Blood Feast 2)

Film is scheduled for release next summer.

Disney's Got Chronicles of Prydain Movie in the Works! The Black Cauldron

This is FANTASTIC news!

According to Variety, "Disney has acquired movie rights to the fantasy series “The Chronicles of Prydain” and is in early development on the project.

The five novels by Lloyd Alexander, based on Welsh mythology, were published annually from 1964 to 1968 and followed the protagonist Taran from youth to maturity. He’s an assistant pig-keeper but initially dreams of being a grand hero.

The books are set in the magical land of Prydain, which resembles ancient Wales and is engaged in a series of battles with Annuvin, the Land of Death.

Other key characters are the young princess Eilonwy, the bard Fflewddur Fflam and a wild creature named Gurgi.

The books are “The Book of Three,” “The Black Cauldron,” “The Castle Llyr,” “Taran Wanderer” and “The High King.” The final book won the John Newbery Medal, given by the Association for Library Service to Children.

Sam Dickerman is the Disney executive on the project, which has not yet been set with a producer, director or writer.

The first two books in the series served as the basis for Disney’s 1985 animated fantasy movie “The Black Cauldron,” in which a Horned King sought to secure an ancient magical cauldron that would aid him in his desire to conquer the world.

The film, directed by Ted Berman and Richard Rich, was the first Disney animated film to include computer-generated imagery. The movie, which carried a $44 million budget, failed to generate significant interest, with a $21 million domestic gross, and was not distributed as a home video release for more than a decade."

We will select four (4) art submissions to be used for all four different covers to the upcoming final issue of SANTERIA: THE GODDESS KISS!

Submissions can be pencils, pencils & inks, or pencils, inks & colors. Remember, we’re looking for professional quality work, so I wouldn’t ink or color your work if you’re only confident in penciling!

Emergency medical techs Michael and Naomi work the violent and unpredictable streets of Spanish Harlem every day, however nothing can prepare the duo for what a routine police shooting reveals; something more powerful and dangerous for Naomi’s future! Something that will bestow upon her a power unlike anything she could ever comprehend!

You can submit as many covers as you’d like, but all submissions are due

Make sure you’re working on a piece that’s 7” x 10.5” and saved at 300dpi. If it’s not the right dimensions, or too low-res, we won’t be able to use your awesome art on the cover!

  • Naomi Clarke- Our protagonist! Naomi is an EMT from Spanish Harlem who now holds the spirit, and power of the goddess within her.
  • Oonaa- The Goddess, a beautiful spirit set out to protect those who follow her!
  • Isaac- The Villain! a large, imposing figure, who has deep connections with the dark side of the supernatural world of Santeria.
  • Mike Ortiz- Naomi’s friend, and fellow EMT responder!

Tips And Hints For Artists Selling In Comics Conventions

I just stumbled across this neat tips list intended for artists that are selling their art in comic books conventions.

To me it's all common sense and we shouldn't need to 'learn' these steps to sell our comic books. The big mistake would be to apply these tips in a simple sales pitch goal. It has to come naturally. Smiling to people. Complimenting visitors on their cosplay. Stuff like that shouldn't be part of a sales pitch. It should be part of the real you!

One thing is important though, try to offer exclusive items, that are not available anywhere else. One shot items, available only at the convention you are right now. People love to get unique items they won't find on your website or on your Patreon page.

  1. If you aren’t good at talking to people, you’ll need to bring someone that is;
  2. Best opening is “hello” or “would you like a free ______?”
  3. Best sales are always in the final hour of the day so don’t leave early;
  4. Ask people what they like to read, let them tell you which of your books they’d be more interested in (what kind of movies do you like can be good too);
  5. Have 10 second and 60 second pitches for each book. With the 60 second know which key pages of art to show;
  6. Have a cheap entry level thing they can buy to try (or give for free);
  7. Have expensive quality items for your hardcore fans;
  8. Have a variety of things. Some people like to choose;
  9. When you leave your table leave a sign saying when you’ll be back;
  10. Take credit cards. With the square register there is no reason not to. You’re missing out on sales when you don’t;
  11. Hand a person talking to you a book to flip through;
  12. Smile;
  13. Make positive comments about their cosplay, kid, t-shirt and follow it up with a question. Where’d you get the shirt?
  14. Plan your calories. You need to eat to keep your energy level up;
  15. Have a clear display with your name, best known property (ies), even a single banner behind you is enough;
  16. Have something visible with your social media;
  17. Bring a small water bottle you can refill at the water fountain;
  18. If you’re getting angry, annoyed or are dead on your feet…take a break;
  19. Try and make people laugh. Try different things. Practice and come up with one liners that will make people smile;
  20. Don’t be pushy. People come to comic conventions to chill!

Alex Toth's Rules For Drawing Comics.

Smart tips by comic book master Alex Toth!

  1. Eliminate the superfluous, the unnecessary. Be lazy!
  2. Edit your art continuously, at every stage. Save work!
  3. Focus on the remaining (important) picture elements.
  4. Emphasize what is important in a scene. Save drawing!
  5. Isolate such key elements (as one does in a view finder).
  6. Closeups only when needed: face(s)-for mood and expression, and objects-small, difficult to distinguish in other ways.
  7. To set a scene, a place, to establish a locate, etc., go to a wide shot, angles okay (down/up, etc.)-but again, simply!
  8. Then, cut to tighter shots-pace them, for interest, etc....(wide/one shot/two shot/group/close-up/tight close-up).
  9. Establish light source, if need be, for dramatic mood and for blacks, drop shadows, etc., on figures & objects and walks, as correctly placed as you can make 'em!
  10. Eliminate such light/shadow work in other shots.
  11. Simplify, simplify, simplify, throughout!
  12. Remember, some scenes will and must be pedestrian, unimportant, and dull- because they are "bridges" between key storytelling scenes. As in any story telling form, movies, TV, books, plays, music, opera, painting, etc., you can't knock 'em dead with every shot. Remember, this is what gives pace to a story, visual commas and periods in a pictorial "paragraph" or "sentence"! These are the resting places in an otherwise moving storm! Use them! Without fear!
  13. Some such "rests" or "pauses" can be heightened in pictorial interest by way of a pretty scene of quiet mood-if your locale allows! Don't stretch logic to do it!
  14. By learning to eliminate unnecessary objects, figures, and background, etc., you can focus on what is left to draw in the shot-and draw it well enough to "carry" the shot!
  15. In other words: strip it all down to essentials and draw the hell out of what is left!
  16. All of this advice is based on Roy Crane's critiques of my work-and he is absolutely correct, on all points!
  17. In the Wash Tubbs and Captain Easy strips and in Buz Sawyer, with Sundays focused on pal Roscoe Sweeny, his work of fifty-odd years demonstrates its validity! in his work, as in no other of his contemporaries' offerings, you will find an extraordinary sense of balance, in his design of space within a panel frame, a strip, or a page! His simplicity allows us to see the use of shapes within his pictures, how they create tension, action or repose...clearly!
  18. He avoided confusing details!
  19. To quote something just read: "To add to truth only subtracts from it!" (Isn't that beautifully put?)
  20. Authentic devices, objects, machines, locales, furniture, buildings, lend credibility!
  21. As Sickles put it: "Understand how a thing is built and you'll have no trouble drawing it through!"
  22. Spend more time thinking-about what and what not to draw, and how-and you'll do less drawing!
  23. Pre-plan, pre-think...Thus, save work and time!
  24. But-whatever you do, do it well!
  25. Tell the story as best you can! Bend to that storm!
  26. Be honest to it. Give it all you've got! Enhance it!
  27. Study films, photographs, paintings, etc. for composition! For cutting, cropping out of nonessentials, pacing, punch, economy, forceful and direct impact. But also for beauty and subtlety-tension, suspense, action, humor, light and dark, balance, line vs. mass, ad infinitum! Use it all!
  28. Analyze everything you see-be critical! Positively so!
  29. See-observe-remember! Build up your memory file!

Some Comics I Got In Italy! Love Fumetti!

One thing I always do when visiting other countries, I look for local comic books and art, or other stuff that is hard to find this side of the ocean. I don't recall having seen any of these titles in my local comics shop. Cool finds from Roma!
