Comic Book Artist Terry Moore on Self-Publishing

I stumbled across this neat interview with Terry Moore, who speaks about how it is for an artist to publish his own work.

Stay indie or try to enroll with a publisher? Both avenues are an option...

Self-publishing is not a new idea.

But the tools we have at our disposal today are new. To get a better picture of the development of self-publishing I wanted to talk to someone who'd been doing it for a while...

Enter Terry Moore.

Terry is an American comic book artist who has been writing & drawing comics for well over twenty years. He's a multi-talented creator who has been independent since before it was cool. You might know him from the comics Strangers in Paradise or Rachel Rising.

***

So, just to start things off - how did you get started with this whole making comics thing?

Been drawing all my life. When I saw the self-publishing movement in 1992, I decided to try it for myself. And 20 years later here I am with a lot of books on my shelf.

For me, you’re definitely one of the pioneers of the self-publishing movement - or at least someone who’s shown what’s possible with it. But for a lot of creators, self-publishing doesn’t come so naturally and they instead work towards pitching first. What are your thoughts on the merits of indie self-publishing versus pursuing traditional publication?

I have enjoyed the freedom of being independent. I had stories I wanted to tell, and I got the chance to tell them without changing or adapting them to other properties.

When you work on the mainstream icons, you're like the 8th husband: there may be some love there but the kids will never trust you.

There’s also the more nebulous territory of doing your own projects, but at publishers - rather than working on established properties - how / why have you stayed the course on being completely independent?

True, it's sink or swim as an indy. I keep at it for so long because making your own books is like having your own band, and 2) indy pays better than mainstream. I'm not getting 8% in the book world, or 18% in the mainstream comics world, or 50% in the creator owned deals... I get 100%. It's worth the extra risk and work.

You do realize don't you that all indy cartoonists are incredibly rich.

Well, I think there’s definitely an argument that it works on paper. After all, a lot of what I do here is push indie forward. And I won’t deny that it makes sense in many ways and has worked for a lot of people - there’s also a long gap in starting out and getting to the point where you’re able to maintain a worthwhile income.

It took me 18 months before I could quit my "day job".

And that was a joke about rich indy cartoonists.

I figured, haha. But there’s definitely a viable path there and I think that’s easy to lose sight of.
How have the web innovations - like digital comics or social media - impacted your work or the way you support yourself?

I've lost a lot of sales to torrents, obviously. Only my website store and Comixology have provided income streams. Social media buzz and 2nd hand recommendations are impossible for me to track or count on.

How important is your convention presence to your business and maintaining connections with your readers?

It's just my opinion but, I think it's important for somebody in the middle of the pack to get out there and stay relevant. Only the super stars can stay away and be fine. The world is constantly wanting to turn away from you. Whatever you did last year is SO over. It's all about now, and getting out there is a sometimes humbling lesson in just how many kids out there DON'T have you on their radar. You go home inspired or fired up or dismayed, but at least you know where you stand.

For the creators intending to follow the same indie path - do you have any advice for them, both in general and specifically in navigating that early period before you can “quit your dayjob”?

Be original and write what you want to read. When you draw, find new ways to show things so that we see the world through your eyes. That's what readers are searching for, new ways of hearing and seeing the familiar. Try not to always draw things that can be photographed. Try not to write the Hero's Journey, people are so burned out on it. Don't be a clone of anybody popular because that's like being a cover band and we all know where they end up. Just be yourself because there are a lot of people out there looking for exactly what you have to offer. So, have faith in yourself and what you have to offer, then work like hell to get it made and out to the world. They will thank you for it.

That’s a mountain of great advice right there. Thanks for taking the time, Terry!

You're welcome. Hope it helps somebody.

I think it can be greatly encouraging to hear an experienced creator extolling the virtues of self-publishing. So keep at it. The road ahead may be new, but it's not entirely foreign!

You Think You're Using The Internet?

So you think you're using the internet to grow your business, raise awareness and make profits off your products and digital content? Wrong.

Only on the web people think they're doing great business, by spending 1000$ on ads and generating $250 sales. The trick is that spending are kept blurred, you don't have the impression you're paying for something, while sales appear to be very good. We're been shown large numbers, big traffic, lots of downloads, all these (usually fake) numbers encourage people to spend more time on it, invest more, create more content. But in the end, reality is that small businesses and content creators only feed corporations and internet service providers.

Actually it's been over 2 years that it costs companies more to protect their businesses on the web than actually using it for business.

20th Century Fox Out Of San Diego Comiccon Because Of Piracy

"20th Century Fox could turn San Diego Comic-Con, held from July 21–24, into a victory parade. Ever since October 2015, when the Golden Globe-winning The Martian was released, the studio has been on a nice roll: Bridge of Spies and The Revenant won Oscars for Best Supporting Actor (Mark Rylance) and Best Actor (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Best Director (Alejandro G. Iñárritu); Kung Fu Panda 3 made a half-billion dollars worldwide; and Deadpool is the highest grossing R-rated movie of all-time. Not even Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip can ruin the good mood...

But the Wrap reported 20th Century Fox won’t showcase any footage from its films in July, because “the studio feels it cannot prevent the piracy of custom trailers and exclusive footage routinely screened for fans in attendance.”

At last year’s Comic-Con, Suicide Squad trailer premiered for a packed Hall H crowd, and Hall H crowd only. But, naturally, it quickly appeared online, and two days later, director David Ayer released the official version before he, or Warner Bros. Pictures, probably wanted to. What’s the problem, you might be wondering. Isn’t any publicity good publicity, especially when your Comic-Con-premiering trailer is more popular than Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice‘s? Certainly, unless it’s a Fantastic Four-level disaster. But studios need to feel like they have the power, even though the opposite’s true (if fans don’t care, they won’t come, and the project dies). Announcing that the trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens is going to debut at this exact time, as opposed to what happened with Suicide Squad, when someone filmed the thing on their phone and uploaded it to YouTube, is how they can control the narrative.

20th Century Fox will still be a presence in San Diego this year, but attendees won’t get to see footage from Assassin’s Creed, Maze Runner: The Death Cure, or Wolverine 3, all of which are scheduled to be released before Comic-Con 2017. Teasers and trailers are a big reason why people are willing to essentially pay money to wait in line, and it’ll be interesting to see how the decision works for 20th Century Fox, and whether other studios follow suit out of the same piracy fears. (Disney, whose D23 Expo is bi-annual, is reportedly considering pulling out, too). If you’re of the belief that there’s no original ideas left in Hollywood, this could be bad news for Comic-Con."

The Death Of Freelance Illustration

Art by Noah Bradley
Totally right. I can confirm, based on my own experience, that back in 1996, I could easily be paid over 1200$ for a commissioned illustration. The same work in 2016 can't get paid over $300.

And over 20 years, studio prices went up, artist supplies went up, living costs went up... What options are left for the artist who wants to earn a living with freelance work?

The road I took personally is the comic books. As a publisher, I became my own freelance artist. I work on my own stuff that ends up published by my company, and the comics sales in conventions replaced the freelance revenues. Seems to work for me. For now.

Here's an interesting insight from professional artist Noah Bradley.
Watch the Chris Oatley podcast below.

"Why is freelance illustration so painful?
...because we’ve never had much of a choice.
...until now.

A few months ago, epic illustrator Noah Bradley and Chris Oatley teamed up for a live podcast + Q&A called “There Are Easier Ways To Become A Professional Artist” which, fortunately, inspired many artists to question the status quo in the professional fields of freelance illustration and concept art.

In their second rant-filled mash-up, the podcast share their thoughts on the death of freelance illustration (as we knew it), how personal projects and storytelling are essential to any current creative career, health insurance for artists, taxes, spec work and why artists quit their dream jobs.

So if you want to get revved-up, riled-up and ready to rock the world with your visual stories, click below and press play..."
