Farewell, Shigeru Mizuki

Today the world has lost a master of the horror manga. Shigeru Mizuki has passed away at the age of 93, in a Tokyo hospital. Farewell, Shigeru, you will be missed.

Shigeru Mizuki (March 8, 1922 – November 30, 2015) was a Japanese manga artist, most known for his Japanese horror manga GeGeGe no Kitaro ("Spooky Kitarou") - originally titled Hakaba Kitaro ("Kitarou of the Graveyard") - Kappa no Sanpei, and Akuma-kun.

Originally from Sakaiminato in Tottori prefecture, he currently resides in Chofu, Tokyo. His pen-name, Mizuki, comes from the time when he managed an inn called 'Mizuki Manor' while he drew pictures for kamishibai. A specialist in stories of yokai (a subgenre in Japanese horror), he is considered a master of the genre. He is also known for his World War II memoirs and his work as a biographer.

Nosferatu Director Friedrich Murnau’s Head Reportedly Stolen From Grave

The skull of legendary vampire film director FW Murnau was reported missing from his family plot, as some speculate possible occult motives for theft.

In what sounds like a scene from one of his legendary horror films, the head of Nosferatu director FW Murnau, who died in 1931, has been stolen from his family plot in a cemetery in Germany.

The grave-robbing occurred in Stahnsdorf, about 12 miles south-west of central Berlin, according to Variety. The graves of Murnau’s brothers were reportedly not disturbed.

Wax residue is said to have been found near the grave, suggesting that candles had been lit, and a possible occult motive for the theft.

Released in 1922, “Nosferatu” was an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel “Dracula.” Murnau worked in Hollywood for several years, directing “Sunrise,” which won several Oscars at the first Academy Awards. He died in a car crash near Santa Barbara but was buried in his native Germany.

Murnau was best known for the expressionist classic 1922 black-and-white vampire horror, later remade by Werner Herzog. He also directed Sunrise, which won several Oscars at the first-ever Academy awards.

Murnau died in a car crash aged 42 in California and was buried in his native Germany.

German news outlet reports that the cemetery overseers are considering whether to seal Murnau’s grave. They added that this is not the first time that it has been disturbed.

William Shatner's Amazing Turkey Fryer

William Shatner loves deep-fried turkey, but over many Thanksgivings and Christmases he's made mistakes, burned himself, and nearly burned down his house. In this dramatic retelling, Bill shows us how dangerous turkey fryers can be.

Amazing Home made 1000W LED lighting - 90k lumens!

Any filmmaker will agree that shooting at night is always tricky when it comes to light a scene. 5k or 10k spots are expensive and bulky. The usual indie trick consists of positioning the crew's cars to light the needed area.

Well here's a cool solution to light very large sets...! The demo is shown without any kind of refractor or diffuser, but you'll get the idea of how powerful it is. Add blue or green gels and you're in for an incredibly creepy shot!

"Publish yourself. Don't rely on others." - Alan Moore

Great advice from Alan Moore to indie writers.

Publish your own stuff. Big publishers will turn you down. Prove you can gain an audience by yourself first, then the big boys won't ignore you. They will want to take advantage of that popularity you CAN generate.

It's still important in an author's career to be part of a big publisher. To make it, you need to be part of a big family. To be part of a catalog lineup. To be associated with a brand that has a network and contacts in the industry.

Much like a talented kid playing great hockey will want to join the NHL. He can't just knock at the door. He's got to go thru junior leagues and prove himself.

Today's tools allow indie creators to publish their work, send it out there, and build an audience. There's never been a best time to publish stuff!

Personal Jetpack is Here! Man Flies Near Liberty Statue!

The Rocketeer lives! Zombies of the Stratosphere and King of the Rocketmen are no longer science-fiction (sort of)...

"The dream of personal flight took a great leap forward last week as Jetpack Aviation unveiled its JB-9 jetpack in spectacular fashion.

Lifting off from a boat, inventor and aviator David Mayman flew the powerful, agile JB-9 around the Statue of Liberty, pausing to salute and pirouette before touching back down. Running on kerosene and using two vectored jet engines, the JB-9 can reach high speeds and altitudes and offers a flight time over 10 minutes, depending on pilot weight. We spoke at length with Mayman to discover how the JB-9 works and how long it'll be before we can buy one."

Leave Facebook, Be Happy: Copenhagen Research Institute

I totally agree with this.
I pretty much left Facebook nearly a year ago (though content is still being posted to my timeline), and I definitely feel much better and productive.

Drop Facebook and be happy: Danish study

The Copenhagen-based Happiness Research Institute has a simple formula for increasing your happiness, social activity and concentration, but it might not be something you’re willing to do...

Checking Facebook gives us instant gratification in the form of new likes and friend requests and provides a virtual one-stop shop for keeping up with the people we care about and the news we’re interested in. But does it also make us unhappy?

A new study from the Happiness Research Institute suggests that it might.

The institute conducted an experiment on 1,095 people in Denmark, asking half of them to refrain from using Facebook for one week. The participants were asked to evaluate their life satisfaction on a scale of one to ten both before and after the one-week experiment and the researchers found “a significantly higher level of life satisfaction” amongst those who did not visit the social media behemoth.

The control group, which continued to use Facebook as normal during the week, gave an average 7.67 ranking to their life satisfaction before the experiment. At by week's end, that had barely changed to 7.75. The other group, however, saw life satisfaction shoot up from 7.56 to 8.12 after their Facebook-free week.

Not only did they feel happier with their lives, they also reported an increase in real-world social activity and were significantly less angry and lonely than the Facebook users.

R.I.P. Gunnar 'Leatherface' Hansen

Actor Gunnar Hansen, best known for playing Leatherface in Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror classic The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, passed away November 8th, at the age of 68. Hansen’s agent told the Associated Press the beloved horror icon died of pancreatic cancer Saturday at his home in Maine.

Hansen was born in Reykjavik, Iceland, but moved to the US with his family at the age of 5. He studied at the University of Texas in Austin, where Hooper and his Texas Chain Saw Massacre cowriter Kim Henkel were based. Hansen secured the role of Leatherface after, literally, filling the door with his tall, massive physique when he met to audition for the part.

Stolen footage? No, just borrowed.

Some moviegoers point out, occasionally, that they've seen that shot or that other shot in other movies. That sure is possible. Film studios, much like any creator out there, tend to borrow some elements they already created for other projects (especially in our digital age where recycling and reusing is easier - and cheaper - than creating).

Sometimes, it's shots 'traded' between two friend companies. Some other times it's purchased between studios. When it's not litterally stock footage, of course.

So there's no scandal here when you see the same stuff in different movies. For instance if Michael Bay's studio paid two hundred thousand dollars for a certain shot, why not re-use it in another movie, and spend five thousand in tweaking it to match the requirements of a new project...

Do they think no one will notice? Of course not. At best, it will cause people to discuss their films, and re-watch them to spot the scenes. Free advertising!

Realms Of Fear #2 is OUT!

It's HERE!
It's finally out!

Realms Of Fear no 2 is shipping to subscribers in the next couple of days, and you'll be able to pick up your copy at my stand during the Ottawa Pop Expo, November 21-22nd!

Of course it will also be listed in the store section of my website, as well as for sale at some retailers' stores.

A couple of things have changed from the 1st issue. Comics are now 28 pages as I got rid of all the other content the other issue had, stuff like convention photos, advertisements, editorial content and so on. I only kept the comics pages, which is roughy the same count as the first issue.

My comic books are now in glorious black and white! No more off white backgrounds and extra tint. Though the extra color was bringing some personality, it was also carrying some extra production cost, which was reflected on the cover price.

And, finally, as you'd expect the last change is the cover price! With less pages and printed in black and white, comic books now go for $4.99. How cool is this now?!

See you all at the Ottawa Pop Expo!
