Annoyed by Old News of Celebrity Deaths Resurfacing?

Oh my god! Michael Jackson passed away!
Oh my god! Leslie Nielsen passed away!
Oh my god! Hunter S. Thompson passed away!

People in shock relaying and sharing the stories of celebrities they think just passed away, while it's been months - or years - they're six feet under. And these posts are followed by tons of other posts pointing out it's old news, with links as proofs.

How come these news keep on coming back over and over, and people share them over and over? Basically, it's search engines effect. Google simply pulls up news that it thinks are relevant to you, so it can get shared all over again.

Of course search engines can develop an algorithm to fix that. But it's not going to happen. Because news shared over and over are clicks on links, therefore ads displays. Old or recent news, accurate or pure invention, it doesn't even matter. As long as people click all over their screens, search engines are happy, and make money.

El Chapo: Explosive Raid Footage!

The Mexican marines who captured El Chapo were wearing GoPro cameras, and the footage of their raid was just released.

The video is remarkable -- the troops are HEAVILY armed ... obviously expecting a major gun battle to take down the drug lord. It kinda looks like an intense game of "Call of Duty" -- except the bullets are real here...

Need A Commercial Printer? Meet Your Assistant: Printer Seeker!

PRINTER SEEKER
is now open!

While discussing with friends online, and chatting with fellow artists in comics conventions, I came to realize that many people are puzzled as to how they can get their books (or poster, postcards...) manufactured in bulk via a commercial printer. They just turn to print on demand without considering other avenues.

Most artist turn to these 'low cost' on-demand printing because it seems easier and, well, cheaper. Of course, print on demand has its advantages, but one thing I don't agree with is that it's cheaper. The total bill may be lower than a commercial print run, but the cost per book definitely isn't. And the cost per book / cover price ratio is the profit margin for the publisher (or self-published artist). Before turning to print on demand, it's worth the effort of looking into commercial offset printing. You may very well find the deal to be more attractive!

But the term 'commercial printer' scares a lot of young artists and small publishers, who see them as large production lines that's only suitable for hundreds of thousands runs.

They're not! Commercial printers aren't industrial monsters who will turn down smaller customers. They're friendly people who will be glad to take a look into any project, big and small. And they will help you find the best deal for your project. How can they be competitive with short run print on demand? For example, if you compare with digital print on demand service, your 28 pages comic book may cost you less when a commercial printer fits all the pages of your book on a single, large 28 X 40" sheet instead of printing 14 sheets two sides. Your production price will go dramatically down.

Now, how to find a commercial printer in your area? Google did help, but when visiting their sites you found the quote request submission form full of technical stuff, and that intimidating image of the monster business thing resurfaces.

That's why I designed that friendly tool that I called Printer Seeker.

It's a simple web page where you enter all the basic informations about your project (book, poster, packaging, or anything else), and when hitting the Send Quote Request, your message is forwarded to the many commercial printers listed in the site's database. From there, look out for a response from some of them. They will guide you thru the steps to make your project come to life.

Before going print on demand for your project, take a look into commercial printers and compare!

Indie Filmmakers: Here's Nebula 4200 5-Axis Stabilizer.

Photographer and filmmaker Von Wong gives his review on this very cool camera stabilizer.

"First thoughts at the Nebula 4200 "5-axis" stabilizer.

At only 1000$, there is no other product on the market that gives you fully motorized 3-axis stabilization with shock absorbers for (rated) 1.6kg.

Stabilization:
Although they market it as "5-axis image stabilization", the spring loaded handles serve more as dampeners and shock absorbers than true 5-axis stabilization. That being said, they do work rather well at taking care of the unwanted bumps when one moves rapidly around. The down-side is that the springs tend to creak quite a little bit.

The motors are strong enough so that my A7r-ii with a 10-18 f4 has hardly any problem regardless of which orientation I fly the camera which is fantastically flexible.

Set-up:
The Nebula features a tool-less design which is pretty snazzy. It makes it very convenient to re-adjust balance. The downside though, is that it is a lot harder to get a super precise calibration. Maybe I just need more practice. For anyone who's balanced gimbal's before, it shouldn't be more than just a little bit frustrating. For someone who's never done it before... It doesn't really come with instructions.

Build Quality:
You get what you pay for. There are a lot of plastic parts and the tooling and machining is definitely not A-grade. That being said, there is not really anything else on the market that has such a tiny form factor.

Customer Support:
This is IMHO the biggest worry - customer support is pretty terrible, unless you speak chinese. They do offer some email support but it is very broken, and not very reassuring.

Additional Features:
The removable battery is a significant step up from any of their previous models. Lasts up to 4 hours."

Phil Tippett: "I Was On LSD When Working On Return Of The Jedi"

I knew it!!

Star Wars animator Phil Tippett is the man behind the Star Wars Cantina masks, the AT-ATs and Jabba's palace - not to mention the dinosaurs of Jurassic Park

Let’s be honest: some the Return of the Jedi scenes set in Jabba’s palace are more than a little trippy – and so it's perhaps not too surprising that the man behind them now admits to experimenting with drugs during filming.

“I took LSD when I was working on return of the Jedi,”
said the Star Wars animator Phil Tippett, in a new video profile with Vice. “And it was fine.”

“Then I decided to go back to work, and I walked into the blue screen stage, and it was like ‘ahhh…’” he adds. “I’d taken way too much.”

Watch the Vice interview below.
